Frontlines of Mental Health and Social Justice
Beyond the accolades, Dr. Lawrence is a boots-on-the-ground warrior for public health. She serves on the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Illinois State Board of Directors, a role that highlights her serious dedication to enacting systemic mental health reform at both the community and legislative levels. She campaigns tirelessly for the underprivileged, armed with a deeply nuanced understanding of the intersections between holistic wellbeing and social justice. Dr. Lawrence fundamentally recognizes that emotional health cannot be separated from the systemic poverty, inequities, and discrimination that fuel psychological distress.

Recently, she spoke alongside several US and Illinois Congresspeople and the Cook County Board President at the Hands Off Our Healthcare event hosted by Citizen Action Illinois at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago due to her involvement with Protect Our Care Illinois. The event commemorated the impact of the Affordable Care Act and urged viewers to rise up against the injustice of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that seeks to drastically cut healthcare funding for the impoverished and elderly. Here is a snippet of her moving reflection:
“I’m a suicide survivor who lives with Major Depressive Disorder.
If it weren’t for Medicaid, I wouldn’t be alive. Because of Medicaid, I was able to move past that moment when I felt I couldn’t go on–to get counseling that helped me work through my demons and build healthier coping practices. I was also finally able to begin receiving the medication I needed, which freed me from being a prisoner of my own thoughts.
Eventually, I was well enough to go back to school, obtain several more degrees, and move forward in my career. Now, as a mental health advocate and board-certified trauma specialist, I’ve helped countless people experiencing struggles similar to mine. Truly life-saving care takes many forms; sometimes it’s the body that needs healing, but just as often it is the mind.
The cuts to Medicaid enacted in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, or OBBBA, will put my health and the health of my family and community at risk.”

Elevating the Voiceless Through Media
Dr. Lawrence also leverages her corporate expertise to champion human rights. Through her various business ventures and numerous publications that she owns, she has dedicated countless hours to transformative pro bono work in media and communications that has benefited well over 1,000 small businesses and artists. By intentionally centering the narratives of disadvantaged populations, she ensures that the triumphs and struggles of marginalized communities are not just heard, but widely celebrated and amplified on a global scale.
Democratizing Wellness: The Holistic Healing Source for Marginalized Society
Perhaps her most revolutionary contribution is the founding of The Holistic Healing Source for Marginalized Society. This groundbreaking initiative democratizes access to spiritual and mental care for populations who are heavily priced out of traditional clinical spaces. Hosting a multi-award-winning free library of self-help books and a plethora of free trainings, research articles and advocacy content, it embodies her core philosophy: psychological well-being is a fundamental human right, not a socioeconomic luxury.
Our nation is hungry for empathetic, brilliant leaders equipped to handle complex human trauma. Dr. Calynn Lawrence represents exactly that—a real-life superheroine utilizing her intellectual rigor and spiritual grounding to construct a fiercely equitable future.
